Why is there a daily cap on meal vouchers in Luxembourg?

Since January 1, 2024, new criteria for the use of meal vouchers have come into effect in Luxembourg. This change, initiated by the government, aimed to provide more flexibility and clarity in the use of your meal vouchers.

When can meal vouchers be used?

Meal vouchers can be used outside of office hours, meaning on weekends, in the evening, and during public holidays.

What is the daily value of meal vouchers?

As of January 1, 2024, the maximum amount is €15 per day.

The employee’s contribution remains the same, which is €2.80 per voucher. Employers who do not yet provide the maximum daily value have a useful lever to motivate their employees and help them cope with inflation. It is also a significant advantage for recruiting and retaining new talent, allowing them to stand out as an employer.

Are daily expenses limited?

Yes, the use of meal vouchers is capped at 5 vouchers per day.

So, if you receive €10 worth of meal vouchers per day, you can spend up to €50 per day. If you receive €15 worth, your daily limit will be €75.

Why is there a daily limit?

This daily limit came into force on 1 January 2024 as part of the government reform linked to the modernisation of the Luxembourg legal framework for meal vouchers, ensuring that this budget is used by employees to purchase meals during their working day.

How much does a healthy lunch cost?
