Meal vouchers: everything that's changing on 1st January 2024

Since 1st January 2024, new criteria for the use of meal vouchers have come into force in Luxembourg. This is a major change initiated by the government, designed to bring greater flexibility and clarity to the use of your meal vouchers.

In practice, here is everything that changed on 1st January 2024:

• Meal vouchers are becoming entirely digital.
  Edenred deployed its 100% digital solution from the end of 2023 in order to offer Luxembourg companies the advantages of its card immediately. Digitising meal vouchers significantly reduces the administrative burden for employers, while simplifying day-to-day management. Paper cheques will remain valid until the end of 2024.
• Meal vouchers can be used for all your everyday food purchases!
  Use Edenred Meal in restaurants, snack bars, food shops and supermarkets.
• The notion of a “working day” has been abolished.
  Meal vouchers can now be used outside office hours, i.e. during weekends, in the evening and on public holidays.
• Daily expenses are limited.
  Meal vouchers may be used for a maximum of €75 per day.

Increase in the value of meal vouchers

From €10.80 to €15 per day!

The government has also announced an increase in the face value of meal vouchers, which can now be up to €15 per day per employee.

The employee contribution remains unchanged at €2.80 per voucher. Employers now have an extra tool to motivate their employees and help them cope with inflation. It’s also a major asset when it comes to recruiting and retaining new talent, which allows you to stand out as an employer.

The real cost of a healthy lunch

Did you know that the idea behind meal vouchers is for employers to give their employees the means to enjoy a good lunch during the working day, so that they can top up their energy for the rest of the day?

In 2023, the government realised that the cost of living was getting higher and higher, and that it was difficult to find a healthy, balanced lunch for under €10!

To ensure that your employees take a healthy and invigorating break, increasing the daily value of the meal voucher to €15 will bring it closer to reality and guarantee more energy and productivity!
